Eco-friendly Guide to Back to School

As summer slowly comes to an end, children and adults everywhere are preparing their backpacks and textbooks for the next school year. Whether you are going to elementary, middle, high school or college, there are many ways to take little (or big) steps toward making eco-friendly choices this back-to-school year.

Look for school materials made from recycled materials

Many school supplies have more eco-friendly options to choose from. For example, when buying notebooks, check to see if the paper is made from recycled materials. Looking for pens? Find some that are biodegradable or made from recycled plastic.

Choose eco-friendly transportation methods

Although this may not be an option for everyone, getting to school in different ways can be more eco-friendly than others. If possible, ride a bike or walk to school. For students in college, find out if there is a public transportation route that is convenient for you or look to carpool with some friends. Any method that helps to limit car use is a small step.

Pack healthier school lunches and bring reusable containers and water bottles

If you are a parent, look for healthier snack alternatives for your kids. Replace the chips and cookies with fruits and nuts. Also, remember to use reusable containers while packing lunch! This will help cut down on unnecessary waste. For college students, invest in a reusable water bottle. This can be especially helpful if your campus has refillable water stations located throughout campus, so you can be sure to always stay hydrated!

Reuse old school supplies

Just because the first few pages of a notebook is written on doesn’t mean it’s not usable anymore. It isn’t necessary to buy new school supplies every school year (though it can be nice to have those shiny new pens). Reuse old school supplies if they still work and save money at the same time!

And of course, invest in a sturdy and eco-friendly backpack

Looking for a new backpack? EcoGear backpacks are made of REPREVE material that is made from recycled water bottles, so you can be sure to carry all of your school essentials while knowing your backpack is eco-friendly!
